HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE DANCE EVALUATION

Here are the instructions for how to prepare for your dance evaluation. You will be getting a call to set up a Zoom meeting. This video explains how to get ready for that meeting. We look forward to seeing you!!

Requirements
Students may submit videos of their technique and solo performances; however, each student is still required to come to a zoom meeting as part of their evaluation. Videos may be submitted via email (see above)
1) Prepare your technique
Students should come dressed in appropriate dance clothes: Shirt and pants that the student can move in. Workout clothes, leotards, shorts, leggings, barefoot or socks (that are not too slippery).

1) Prepare your technique
- Technique expectations involve a combination of jazz and lyrical dance techniques.
- To prepare for the dance technique portion of the audition, watch our instructions video. You can also take an online dance class on YouTube to review your dance technique or you can take a dance class at a local dance studio.
- The solo should show off the student’s best dance and performance abilities.
- Students should prepare a solo piece of choreography.
- The solo may be in a style other than jazz or lyrical dance (such as Latin, Afro, or Hip-hop dance) if that has been the student’s primary training.
- The solo should be no more than 30 seconds in length.
- All students' solo pieces will be reviewed by the evaluation committee.
- Poise and Appearance: as shown in neatness and attentiveness
- Attitude: appropriate classroom behavior showing respect to teachers, a sense of commitment to dance and a desire to learn
- Technical Ability: demonstrated achievement in dance technique, and potential as shown by the ability to pick up new movement information, take verbal and demonstrated corrections and revise one’s work on the spot
- Body Alignment: showing knowledge of basic anatomical relationships
- Musicality and Rhythm
- Creativity: as shown in the student’s solo choreography
- Performance Skills: the ability to project and communicate to an audience
- General Understanding of Dance: as demonstrated in movement and/or in verbal or written form
Students should come dressed in appropriate dance clothes: Shirt and pants that the student can move in. Workout clothes, leotards, shorts, leggings, barefoot or socks (that are not too slippery).
Recommendations:
- Wear solid colors – no fancy appliqués or patterns.
- Do not wear midriff-baring outfits.
- Do not wear baggy shirts or baggy pants.
- Hair should be neatly pulled off the face in a bun or ponytail if long or neatly combed if short. This applies to girls and boys alike.
